El Brigada Armando Salazar del GIETMA-UME (Grupo de Intervención en Emergencias Tecnológicas y Medioambientales de la Unidad Militar de Emergencias) camina sobre escorias volcánicas a más de 300ºC ataviado con un traje especial con escudo térmico para recoger muestras para el IGME-CSIC (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España del Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas).
Este evento marca la primera erupción del Volcán Cumbre Vieja desde 1971. La isla de La Palma, forma parte del archipiélago Canario en España y es una de las islas más activas del mismo con una población de 85.000 personas. Esta última erupción fue precedida por miles de terremotos. Más de 7000 personas fueron evacuadas y más de un millar de casas destruidas.

The last event marks the first time this volcano has erupted since 1971. The latest eruption was preceded by several earthquake swarms. More than 7000 villagers have been evacuated and more than a thousand homes have been destroyed.
